Archaeologists have discovered a Viking-era ship during the Birk excavations on Björkö Island in Sweden.
Birka, often called the first city in Sweden, was founded in the middle of the 8th century AD on the shores of Lake Mälaren. The city has proven to be an important trading center for traders and traders throughout Europe and beyond.
Excavations by Stockholm University scientists have discovered a rock-lined hollow in the coastal area with a wooden slope on the ship below. The team also discovered a large number of ship rivets, slate windshields and woodworking tools, suggesting that the site was a Viking-era shipyard. Sven Isaksson, a professor of archeology at Stockholm University, said: “A place like this has never been discovered, it is the first of its kind, but the findings convincingly show that it was a shipyard.
Through systematic research, mapping and drone research, we can now show that Birka has, in addition to the urban environment, a very rich maritime cultural landscape with remnants of everything from piers to launching ships and shipyards.
Ships and shipping were characteristic of the Viking Age in the Nordic countries, both for warfare and trade. The expression of distant trade in the Viking Age is similar to the city's trade poles, which then appeared in the Nordic countries.
Birka has city walls around the city for defensive, legal, economic and social borders. It is noteworthy that the shipyard is located outside the fortress, next to the landing site, which is currently being investigated.
